A message from Clr Jerome Laxale, Mayor of City of Ryde:
Dear Resident and Ratepayer,
On 6 January 2016, the State Government announced that it had referred 35 merger proposals to the Office of Local Government, including a proposal to merge Ryde, Hunter’s Hill and Lane Cove Councils.
Suburbs to the east including St Leonards and Greenwich, north to Artarmon and Macquarie Park, west to Eastwood and Melrose Park and south to Meadowbank, Gladesville and Woolwich will form the basis of a new proposed council for our region (see map below).
This is your final opportunity to have your say and opinions heard. You can make a submission as an individual or organisation.
Following on from extensive consultation with our community in early 2015, 81% of you told us you were opposed to forced amalgamations. Like you, we’re concerned about increased rates, the loss of identity and proud history of our local area, and the reduction in services currently enjoyed by residents and businesses within the City of Ryde.
In our joint consultation with our communities, 92% support was received from the communities of Ryde, Hunter’s Hill and Lane Cove Councils to form a Joint Regional Authority as either their first or second choice. Despite overwhelming community support, neither our local member or The Premier have listened.
I’d encourage you to have your say on this important matter. This is a critical time in the history of your local Council, and in maintaining the principles of democracy on which our constitution is founded.
Please visit Council’s website at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au for more information.
Submissions close at 5pm, Sunday 28 February. Now is the time to tell the State Government what you think of its plan for the new proposed merger of Ryde, Hunter’s Hill and Lane Cove Councils.
Clr Jerome Laxale | Mayor, City of Ryde
