A key YC/NWBEN program employers in Ryde will be interested in is the Work Placement program. Employers are invited to take HSC (Year 11 and 12) students for one week Year 11 and Year 12 on work placement. These students are doing a TAFE certificate in a national framework course in collaboration with their HSC studies. Being involved in work placement in their chosen industry field gives them a taste of a real life work situation, and employers are taking on students genuinely interested in their industry. It's a win/win situation. NWBEN places approximately 1700 students a year in our area on this program.
NWBEN also runs a group training organisation for YC Industry Link and offers pre-vocational courses for potential apprentices and trainees. They work with employes to take on apprentices and trainees. Some apprenticeships are school-based with students commencing their apprenticeship while they're still at school. NWBEN runs six week courses in skills shortage areas such as health, property services and IT to give students an insight in what they could experience in the workplace.
YC/NWBEN is planning to set up a social/business enterprise, finding businesses who will get involved in putting students through training/experience to give them a grounding in the business skills for setting up their own business in the future. In short, YC/NWBEN turns education into jobs.
