Industrial Relations seminars from the NSW Office of Industrial Relations
In conjunction with local Chambers of Commerce

Office of Industrial RelationsRyde Business Forum, in conjunction with local Chambers of Commerce, is delighted to invite you to a special series of seminars and short courses to be delivered by the Office of Industrial Relations. The OIR runs these seminars all over NSW, and until now there has not been a dedicated series for businesses in the Ryde area.

Are you confused about industrial relations laws?
These short courses and workshops will help you to understand how the current industrial relations legislation affects your business. They are designed to help you understand your legal rights and obligations as an employer in NSW.

Are you looking at approaches to retain your key employees?
These short courses and workshops conducted by the Office of Industrial Relations will help you develop strategies to improve staff retention and keep skilled employees.

Do you need guidance on managing real workplace issues?
The short courses and workshops provide you with details on what to do when you employ staff, motivating your staff, developing workplace policies, negotiating with staff and managing poor performance.

If you employ staff in NSW then you cannot afford to miss these short courses and workshops. Workshops during July to December will be conducted at Dummore Lang College n North Ryde.

The program for this series of courses is:

Industrial relations in NSW - Rights and responsibilities. Are you confused about industrial relations laws and how they apply to you? Do you have questions about wages, parental leave or award entitlements? This short course will help you:
• understand the employment laws that apply to you
• provide you with details of your obligations in relation to employment records, payslips and awards
• understand leave entitlements
• know where to go for further information and assistance.
Free • Duration: 3 hours, 9am - 12noon Wednesday 30 July at Dunmore Lang College

Managing employees - A problem-free workplace. Managing staff in a small business means an employer has to be much more than
‘the boss’. This workshop helps employers implement good employment practices to deal with the challenge of keeping staff motivated and performing well. The workshop also gives advice on:
• managing difficult workplace situations
• introducing recognition and incentive schemes
• counselling employees at work
• managing poor performance
• handling a dismissal if it is unavoidable
• performance feedback.

Workplace policies - Write your rules. Well written workplace policies help employers more effectively manage by setting out what is acceptable and unacceptable in the workplace. This intensive workshop helps employers and managers plan, write and apply workable
policies to suit their individual workplaces.
The workshop covers:
• steps in planning, developing and writing workplace policies, policy structure and content
• introducing policies into the workplace
• discussion of contemporary policy issues in the workplace.

Recruitment and retention. Replacing staff is a very expensive process. This workshop promotes good employment practice and explains the recruitment process and the issues to consider, to not only attract, but to retain good staff. Employers will be provided with
information to develop strategies to assist them in this process. It also covers:
• your legal obligations in the recruitment process
• advertising your vacancy to get the right person
• probationary employment requirements
• dealing with skill shortages
• consideration of various retention strategies
• implementation of chosen retention strategies.

Workplace arrangements - Understanding awards and agreements. Do you know how to read and understand the award/NAPSA*/agreement that applies in your workplace? This is a workshop designed to provide employers with a general introduction to awards and agreements that apply in NSW. The workshop will explain:
• the purpose and application of the award/NAPSA/agreement that applies to your workplace
• the difference in entitlements under the state and federal systems
• types of workplace agreements
• how to calculate entitlements, such as wages, overtime payments, allowances, sick leave, annual leave and long service leave
• where to go for further information and assistance.

Employing clerical staff in NSW. This workshop is designed for employers who currently employ, or are considering employing, clerical staff. These workshops provide employers who already have an understanding of basic employment conditions, with a more thorough working knowledge of conditions specific to clerical staff.
• how to determine who is covered by the award and their correct classification
• how to calculate more complex award specific entitlements
• general employment practices when employing staff.
