Five essentials for sharing your videos

Geoff Anderson of Sonic Sight‘s job is making videos for corporate clients. He does a fantastic job, but often the clients don’t make the most of their shiny new video. Here are Geoff’s tips for giving your videos the exposure they deserve:

1. HOST IT ON YOUTUBE

How lucky are we that there is a global video hosting platform that you can use for free. Everyone knows about it, and it is the second largest search engine. With your video on Youtube it is now able to watched on mobile devices pretty much anywhere, anytime. Even if you’re not sure if the world is ready to see your video you can upload it and have it unlisted. That means only people who you provide the link to will be able to see it.

And then when you’re ready click public and it becomes visible to the whole world and searchable as well. There’s a comment section just under the video. I recommend that you put your business’s website address as the first line there. This will make it easy for people to find you. You can also include plenty of other relevant information in the comments section that will help with the search-ability of your video.

Of course Vimeo is also a viable free credibly video hosting option. Just host it on one of them.

2. EMBED ON YOUR WEBSITE

Once it is on YouTube or Vimeo is it easy to share it onto your website. You can cut and paste the share code (or get your web person to do it for you). I recommend you place it on the front page of your website where it can be seen. Too often I have to burrow through a client’s website to find a valuable video carefully hidden away. It’s like you need some reward if you ever find it. It shouldn’t be that hard.

Put it front and centre of your website in clear view.

Video is such a rich, engaging format you should make the most of it. Don’t hide it.

3. SHARE IT ON FACEBOOK.

Facebook is quickly chasing YouTube as the best way to share your video content. As you will notice Facebook has set itself up to stream videos before you even click on them. It works when you upload the video directly to Facebook. If you post a link to a video on YouTube or Vimeo, the viewer has to click on the link before it plays. So to get better Facebook engagement, upload it directly to Facebook.

You will also probably have noticed that the ideal format for Facebook videos includes having captions. These can be created when you make the video or they can be uploaded as an SRT file when you upload the video. The SRT file is the captions file. It is basically a list of timecodes and the text that needs to appear at a particular point. If you’ve video is scripted then you already have the text and you just need to break it up with the timecodes.

4. ADD IT TO YOUR EMAIL SIGNATURE.

Once your video is on YouTube or Vimeo it’s easy to cut and paste the link and include as part of your email signature. This means everyone who receives an email from you will have the chance to watch your video. You’ll be surprised how many people do that just out of curiosity.

This is an ideal way to build rapport with your potential customer before they have even met you.

If you are using Gmail or Google Apps for your emailing, the YouTube link will play within the email itself.

And if you are creating videos regularly you can change the link every month or so to keep it interesting for your audience.

5. ENRICH YOUR LINKEDIN PROFILE

LinkedIn allows you to insert video content as part of your profile. Stand out from the crowd with an impressive video which showcases your business and value. Perhaps create a video which provides an overview of who you are and what drives you. Once again it’s about building rapport before you’ve even met someone.

LinkedIn is designed now to accept video content via links or as embedded content.

Of course there are plenty of other ways to share the love of your video around. Remember this is a valuable asset that has the power to move and engage with people – but only if it is being seen.

Make the most of your videos by ensuring they are getting traction online.

And don’t forget to keep sharing. Not everyone will see your video the first time you post it. So keep posting. Keep sharing.
