HillsSIP seeks hosts for Bite Size Industry Visits

The HillsSIP Bite Size Industry Visits are up and running with four visits already having taken place since September 2012.

This program is designed to engage students from Year 8 onwards and showcase the different types of career pathways within a variety of organisations. Middle and Senior Management address students and talk about how they got to where they are within these companies. They provide a frank and realistic approach about their experiences since leaving high school.

Students from Marsden High School had a fantastic opportunity and got an in depth tour of Johnson & Johnson’s Head office at Macquarie Park. They were shown all aspects of the organisation, from manufacturing, distribution, marketing etc. The Managing Directors from both Johnsons & Johnson and Janssen took time out of their busy schedules and spoke with the students explaining their career paths and how they became MD’s. Other staff at Johnson & Johnson also took the time to speak with the students and gave them insight into all the different roles available in a company like Johnson & Johnson.

Clair Poriazis NSW Workplace Coach/Assessor Manager for McDonalds also hosted students from Epping Boys High School and Mission Australia’s STAT Program. All were given a tour of the corporate offices and also a power point presentation on Claire’s story and how she has progressed in McDonalds as well as some interesting facts about the expansion of McDonalds in Australia.

Epping Boys High School also attended an Industry Bite Visit at The Concourse Chatswood, a building owned by Willoughby Council but run by Century Venues. Students were shown through the building including all theatres, led by David Banks (Operations Manager), Lisa Taylor (Business Events Coordinator) and Simon Koenig (Technical Manager). The stories of their career paths were inspiring and the students’ feedback was excellent.

Evaluations were completed by students that attended an Industry Bite Visit and the results were extremely positive with all students expressing an interest to ‘do it again’.

In 2013 HillsSIP is securing visits into businesses such as Microsoft, Holden, Crowne Plaza Norwest, TAFE Northern Sydney and Macquarie Uni.
